Bonds, waivers and the questions to ask

A refundable bond, a damage waiver and insurance are different things. Read the particular supplier contract rather than relying on a label.

Understand what the bond secures

Ask how much is charged or held, when it is released, what can be deducted and how a dispute is handled. A security bond is separate from a part-payment toward your hire bill. Keep the receipt and agreed condition record.

Ask what a waiver actually covers

A waiver may limit liability only in specified circumstances. Do not assume it covers theft, misuse, every type of damage or your other responsibilities. Kennards explicitly distinguishes its damage waiver from insurance in its contract; other suppliers have their own arrangements.

Read exclusions before collecting

Ask about excess amounts, security requirements, unattended equipment, transport and prohibited use. If the financial exposure is unclear or unacceptable, resolve it before proceeding or choose a different approach to the job.

Record handover and return

Ask the supplier to note existing damage and included accessories. Return equipment as agreed and keep confirmation. Photos can help record condition, but do not replace the supplier’s handover process or contract.

General planning information. Actual charges, responsibilities and equipment suitability depend on the supplier, contract and task.
